With the coming of Christmas time, despite many things seemingly not favoring meeting and celebrating: closed stores, lack of products, transportation problems, lack of health, and innumerable personal or social difficulties; there is a faint light in the depths of our hearts that does not go out, a desire for good, a hope for something beautiful that gives us back the joy of living.

Dante Alighieri wrote that “each has a nebulous notion of the good on which his mind may rest, and longs for it; and so each struggles to achieve that end (Divine Comedy, Purgatorio XVII).

“Although it is reduced, neglected, or defeated, the heart does not cease to desire. Frequently, the impossibility of getting rid of this wait can seem like a condemnation. But the most acute spirits identify the true condemnation in something else. In his diaries This Business of Living, Cesare Pavese reminds us that ‘waiting is still an occupation. It is having nothing to wait for that is terrible.’

We all know what life becomes when we stop waiting: boredom that leads to despair and cynicism. Waiting constitutes the structure of our being. The substance of our ‘I’ is waiting.” Julián Carrón (2012).

In the Christian tradition, Christmas celebrates the mystery of the freedom of God who takes the initiative, thus overcoming all the expectations of man and coming to meet him in a simple and concrete way. The infinite Being becomes finite, allows us to find Him in our reality thus changing the whole method of the relationship of man in front of the transcendent. What greater gift can the human being aspire to?

Therefore, all the good that we can do through our projects and ideas depends partly on us, of continuing working together, of joining small lights to form torches to guide the path of many people; but on the other hand is the expectation that materializes in God’s initiative that we commemorate at Christmas, which fills our whole life with His Presence that enlightens and makes all things new.
