As a year ends and a new calendar is released, it is very important to take stock of what has been experienced and set some goals for times ahead. Undoubtedly, 2023 was a very intense year from many points of view. The fact that you received, including this newsletter, 12 months of very good news makes it evident that it is possible to change the lives of people who want to work and have a better future.

In that sense, Trabajo y Persona, together with our allies, is an instrument for all this to happen, but we are sure that many other stories are worth telling. However, when we live in such a complicated context, full of challenges from every point of view, it is common for our attention to be diverted to what affects us and which somehow destroys many of the plans we made last year.

However, which lenses help us properly see what has happened to us? Taking into account what we planned and adding all the unforeseen events, we ended up looking at the things that went “well” and others that went “badly” according to the result we expected. The most common is to be grateful for the good and to try to understand the lessons learned.

However, what meaning is hidden behind everything that happens, without reducing it to the positive and negative? This is a question we should always keep because it serves not only to evaluate the year that ends but to look to the future. “The contemporary man seems unable to perceive the depth of reality that our eyes see and touch, whether it is a flower or a human face,” says Joseph Ratzinger, and puts on the table a fundamental issue that we have in front of everything that happens in our life: the gaze.

For this reason, I am so grateful that Christmas is celebrated before the end of the year. Because for Christians, “faith not only looks at Jesus but also looks from the point of view of Jesus, with his eyes: it is a participation in his way of seeing… faith in the Son of God made man in Jesus of Nazareth does not separate us from reality but allows us to understand its deepest meaning. A new way of seeing opens up; seeing becomes following Christ, and faith appears as a journey of gaze, in which the eyes are accustomed to seeing in-depth,” as Pope Francis well said.

In this way, we can walk together to discover the meaning of everything that has happened and that will happen to us, and especially to have a new gaze to be able to tell all the good news that the new year has prepared for us.
