According to data from the “World Population Prospects 2019 of the United Nations” report, in 2050, one in six people will be over 65 years old (16%). In 2018, for the first time in history, people aged 65 and over outnumbered children under the age of five worldwide. The number of people aged 80 and over is estimated to triple, from 143 million in 2019 to 426 million in 2050.

The phenomenon of this new longevity, combined with the decline in birth rate, is shaping new demography worldwide. This phenomenon, together with migrations, technological changes, and the future of labor, is one of the main challenges facing humanity in the first half of the 21st century.

In most ancestral cultures and religions, the value and wisdom of the elderly were preserved as a fundamental factor in the processes of social cohesion, memory and preservation of traditions, and even in their governability. However, today we are witnessing how older adults are discarded from the main areas of life and are considered “a burden”, a “social expense”, based on purely quantitative reasons of productivity. In addition, the figure of the young adult is exalted as the main impact factor in development.

“Youth is beautiful, but eternal youth is a very dangerous hallucination. Being old is just as important—and beautiful—as being young. Let’s remember this. The alliance between generations, which gives back to human being all the ages of life, is our lost gift and we have to recover it. It has to be found in this culture of discarding and in this culture of productivity.” (Catechesis on old age, Pope Francis).

In this area we have 3 significant challenges with the new longevity and demographic change:

    • The intergenerational relationship to favor a dialogue between children, young people, adults and older adults, in order to learn from each other and find the value that each one contributes to the development of humanity.
    • Develop public policies and initiatives from various sectors for the assistance of older adults who need it, not only with care for those who suffer from a particular health condition but also with the great disease of our time: loneliness.
    • In addition to assistance projects, being able to creatively develop “existence” initiatives, where we can favor and take advantage of the potential of older adults, their wisdom and offer them expectations of a dignified life.
“Autumn (of life) is a second spring when each leaf (each person) is a flower (valued and displayed with all its dignity).” Albert Camus
