People who dedicate their lives to music and cooking have many characteristics in common. In addition to delighting our senses, in both cases, their mastery and passion at work can be clearly perceived because they have a privileged connection with the tradition of the countries and they express their culture.

Like so many other trades, it takes years of theoretical and practical preparation to perfect their execution; however, through the friends that I have both in composition and musical performance, as well as in gastronomy, I have discovered the value they have as an expression of the person and as service to other trades. A piece of music or a song, as well as a meal, has one or more people behind it who have composed it; it can be said that they are an expression of themselves. And on the other hand, music and good food inspire others to work; they nourish the body and soul of other people.

With a forceful phrase, Luigi Giussani affirms that “no expression of human feelings is greater than music”, and “singing is the highest expression of the human heart”. Beyond artistic preferences, music has a unique charm in its infinite compositions, styles, and genres, to please the tastes of every human being on the planet on multiple occasions and moments in life. Music can accompany us, both in moments of reflective loneliness, sadness, and melancholy, as well as in various types of celebrations. Each of us may have a soundtrack to our life which links with the soundtrack of many others.

For his part, Paolo Massobrio affirms that “eating means participating in life because it is the continuation of the first act of our existence which begins with breastfeeding: something not only nutritious but also soothing. Therefore, eating is always related to sharing, to a moment that nourishes community, to trying together the same taste experience. “

This statement takes another step towards the communal phenomenon of cooking: the value of eating together and sitting at the table. Although it may be a widespread practice, personally I prefer to always eat in company, with family, friends and even strangers. Sharing the table has an important meaning as a community and social integration phenomenon.

In such a polarized country, it is much needed to find meeting places to help us look to the future, betting on the common good, and ceasing to focus only on our differences. Recognizing our popular traditions and the value of building together, and being able to sit at the table to share bread and listen to our songs, is more necessary than ever.
