What value can a job consisting of serving a glass of water have? It is said that nobody should be denied a glass of water, but how do we value those who do this job? Furthermore, with what conscience, professionalism and passion do we serve in order for others to take the credit?

Recently, a very moving event occurred that makes us reflect on the works that are “behind the scenes”, that involve all the people who give their best to achieve the goals of an institution but are not the visible face and most of the time are not recognized.

On September 25, 2022, Eliud Kipchoge broke the world record again in the Berlin marathon, after having done it in 2018. That news that grabbed all the headlines included the prominence of his “water carrier”. It turns out that, in this type of race, there are volunteers who deliver hydration to the marathoners at specific moments of the route, and then they have to travel by bicycle to go ahead to the next point. In Kipchoge’s case, the water carrier is the German Claus Henning-Schulke, who also accompanied him in the 2018 record. It is truly moving to see how Claus, an amateur triathlonist who has been a volunteer since 1998 in the marathon, celebrates delivering each bottle of water to Kipchoge on time.

If we think about it, it is the work of the “invisibles” that makes the world develop, because it is not so much the influencers, artists, politicians, and athletes who make the difference. Undoubtedly, everyone’s work is essential, but if the pandemic left us with something, it is to realize the value that each one of us contributes to society: those who run the administration behind a desk, the farmers who plant what we eat, the drivers who transport it, those who clean an office or a hospital, those who collect garbage from the streets, those who develop software or make a chair, including the water carrier of the world record in the Berlin marathon; everyone works so that their labor serves the common good.

Awakening awareness of the value of each of our work can change a person’s life, make our task connect with the infinite, and enter reality with a passion such as that shown by Claus. It is, without a doubt, essential to have an impact on public policies in order to reach fair remuneration according to the responsibilities and performance of each person. It must therefore engage all social, political and economic actors. However, the starting point becomes clearer if we realize that work, whatever it may be, dignifies the person.

What a beautiful task we have!
